Seychelles Marks Labour Day With Interfaith Mass and Celebrations

VICTORIA, Seychelles — Seychelles marked International Labour Day with a traditional interfaith mass attended by workers, trade union representatives, government officials, and members of the public. The mass formed the centrepiece of a day of celebrations honouring the contribution of workers to national development and reflecting on the values of dignity, fairness, and solidarity in the workplace.

The service brought together leaders from the country’s major faith communities, who offered prayers and reflections on the importance of work in human life. According to organisers, the interfaith character of the mass reflects the unity of Seychelles’ workforce across religious and cultural lines. The ceremony included readings, hymns, and addresses from senior church leaders and trade union officials.

According to the Ministry of Employment, the Labour Day celebrations continued after the mass with cultural performances, family activities, and community gatherings across the islands. Workers were recognised for their dedication and contribution to the country’s social and economic progress. The ministry has emphasised that Labour Day provides an opportunity to reflect on achievements and to renew the national commitment to decent work for all.

Events were held in Victoria and across the districts, with activities organised by trade unions, employers, and community groups. Officials said the strong turnout reflects the importance that Seychellois attach to Labour Day as a celebration of working people. The ministry has pledged to continue working with social partners to improve working conditions and create opportunities for all Seychellois.
