Health Authorities Issue Guidelines for Safe Screen Use by Children
VICTORIA, Seychelles — Health authorities in Seychelles have issued new guidelines for the safe use of digital screens by children, addressing growing concerns about the impact of excessive screen time on young people’s health and development. The guidelines provide practical recommendations for parents, educators, and caregivers on managing screen use in ways that support healthy development.
The recommendations cover a range of areas including daily screen time limits appropriate to different age groups, the importance of screen-free activities, and strategies for creating healthy digital habits. According to the Ministry of Health, the guidelines are based on the latest international research and have been adapted to the local context. The ministry has emphasised that the goal is not to eliminate screens, but to promote balanced and mindful use.
According to health officials, excessive screen time has been linked to a range of concerns including sleep disruption, reduced physical activity, eye strain, and impacts on mental health and social development. The guidelines encourage families to establish clear rules around screen use, to prioritise face-to-face interaction and outdoor play, and to model healthy digital behaviours. Schools are also encouraged to incorporate digital literacy and wellbeing into their curricula.
The Ministry of Health has called on parents, educators, and healthcare providers to work together to implement the guidelines and to support children in developing a healthy relationship with technology. The guidelines will be distributed through schools, healthcare facilities, and community organisations, with public education campaigns planned to raise awareness. Officials said the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to protecting and promoting the health of children in an increasingly digital world.
