Schools Host Tree-Planting Ceremony to Mark Jubilee Year of Unity
VICTORIA, Seychelles — A symbolic tree-planting ceremony was held at several schools across Seychelles, bringing together students, teachers, and senior government officials to mark the spirit of unity in the Jubilee year. The event was attended by principal secretaries for environment and general education, who emphasised the importance of environmental stewardship as a core national value.
The ceremony forms part of a broader national initiative to plant thousands of indigenous and fruit-bearing trees across school grounds and public spaces. According to the Ministry of Education, the programme aims to instil environmental awareness in young people while contributing to the country’s reforestation and climate resilience goals. Each tree planted represents a living symbol of the nation’s commitment to sustainability.
According to officials present, students actively participated in the planting, learning about the role of trees in combating climate change, supporting biodiversity, and preserving water resources. The principal secretary for environment noted that engaging young people in environmental action is essential to building a sustainable future. The schools committed to ongoing care and monitoring of the newly planted trees.
The tree-planting initiative is expected to continue throughout the year, with additional ceremonies planned at schools in Praslin and La Digue. The programme aligns with the Jubilee celebrations and the government’s broader environmental agenda, which prioritises green spaces, biodiversity conservation, and climate adaptation. Teachers and students have welcomed the initiative as a meaningful way to mark the historic year.
