New Bishop Seeks Renewed Partnership with State on Youth and Moral Guidance

A renewed era of collaboration between the Catholic Church and the Seychelles state is on the horizon following a landmark meeting between President Dr Patrick Herminie and the newly ordained Bishop Landry Philippe Rasamison at State House on April 12. The courtesy visit, which also included the newly appointed Vicar General Father Éric Léon, focused on strengthening institutional relations, revisiting existing agreements, and addressing pressing social issues, particularly concerning youth and drug abuse. Bishop Rasamison emphasised the Church’s desire not to impose but to propose and accompany, stating, “Confronted with problems like drugs, we must offer young people a path of hope and freedom.”

Three main points dominated the dialogue: enhancing durable cooperation between Church and State, updating Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) to improve practical application, and the Church’s role in modern society, including modernising its communication tools. President Herminie praised the involvement of youth, especially altar servers, and expressed support for the Bishop’s mission. The Bishop also highlighted the existing agreement for religious instruction in schools, noting the need for open dialogue on its implementation. This meeting underscores the enduring influence of the Church in Seychellois society and sets a cooperative tone for tackling complex social challenges through a partnership based on respect and shared moral purpose.
