Seychelles Secures R208 Million Boost from China in Landmark Development Deal

Seychelles has secured a major financial and strategic boost after signing a new development cooperation agreement with China worth approximately R208.4 million.

The agreement, signed on April 16 by Foreign Affairs and Diaspora Minister Barry Faure and Chinese Ambassador Lin Nan, marks another milestone in the long standing partnership between the two nations. The funding, announced earlier by China’s Vice President during a state visit in March, is expected to play a critical role in accelerating Seychelles’ national development agenda.

What makes this deal even more significant is its timing. The agreement coincides with 50 years of diplomatic relations between Seychelles and China, as well as Seychelles’ own 50th anniversary of independence. Both milestones add symbolic weight to what is already a high impact financial commitment.

According to Minister Faure, the funds will be channelled into key priority sectors that directly affect the lives of Seychellois citizens. These include social housing, food security, national security, energy transition initiatives, and critical infrastructure development. These sectors form the backbone of the government’s long term economic and social strategy.

Ambassador Lin Nan highlighted that the Seychelles China relationship has evolved into a strategic partnership spanning multiple sectors, including tourism, trade, education, healthcare, infrastructure, defence, and cultural exchange. She emphasised that this latest grant reflects not just economic cooperation, but a deep rooted and resilient friendship.

With Seychelles navigating global economic pressures and climate challenges, this injection of funding is expected to provide both immediate support and long term stability, reinforcing the country’s development trajectory.
