LWMA Launches Door-to-Door Waste Collection Pilot in Three Districts

VICTORIA, Seychelles — The Landscape and Waste Management Agency (LWMA) is launching a pilot door-to-door waste collection programme in three districts, namely Au Cap, Baie Lazare and Perseverance 1. This was announced by deputy chief executive of the agency, Rahul Mangroo, at a press conference yesterday afternoon at the agency’s headquarters at KB building, Providence.

The project, which will run from July to December 2025, is designed to improve waste collection, minimise littering and promote proper waste sorting at home. However, its success heavily depends on community participation. LWMA is encouraging others that have not joined to do so before the closing date. ‘Today, we are encouraging people from the three districts to come forward and participate,’ he said. Those who register will receive a temporary bin and an agreement outlining their responsibilities. Each participant will be expected to manage their own bin and ensure their waste is properly sorted.

The waste accepted under this pilot includes all typical household waste generated daily by families. Residents are reminded that recyclable waste such as beverage PET bottles, cans and alcoholic glass bottles should not be mixed with household waste. Instead, these items should be collected separately and donated to collectors, placed beside a bin or at a bin site, or returned to redemption centres. Organic waste can also be reused by transforming it into homemade natural fertiliser for plants. Certain waste types will not be accepted, and LWMA will work closely with participating households to ensure the smooth operation of the pilot.
