La Retraite School Marks 30th Anniversary with Tree-Planting Initiative

VICTORIA, Seychelles — La Retraite school yesterday planted 13 trees on the school’s compound in collaboration with the Rotary Club of Victoria, as part of activities to mark the school’s 30th anniversary and Children’s Day. The initiative reflects the school’s ongoing commitment to environmental education and the integration of outdoor learning into the daily life of pupils.

Foram Varsani, the President of the Rotary Club of Victoria, explained that this year the club is making an effort to incorporate schools into its nature projects. “We are approaching different schools so we can plant fruit trees around the compounds. Our aim is for the students to learn the value of taking care of nature and to promote this goal,” she said. The Rotary Club of Victoria also plans to work on a cancer awareness programme in collaboration with the health ministry.

The head teacher of La Retraite school, Jina Ernesta, welcomed the initiative, stating that it will help instil lasting values in the students. “The Rotary Club approached us with this project and we wanted it to coincide with Children’s Day and the 30th anniversary of the school,” she said, adding that the school has always encouraged outdoor classroom activities and the promotion of environmental education. Having a variety of plants nearby will help teach students about diversity in plants, and will also be useful in subjects like science.
