Chaka Brothers Celebrates 60 Years of Trade and Heritage
VICTORIA, Seychelles — The iconic Chaka Brothers, affectionately known by many older residents as La Maison Chaka, is celebrating its 60th anniversary, a remarkable milestone in both business and the country’s multicultural and architectural history. To mark the occasion, the Chaka family is hosting a public celebration today and tomorrow from 10.30am to 3.30pm in the car park of the National Museum in Victoria, turning the commemoration into an event for the community.
Visitors can expect food stalls and cultural interactions that reflect the Chaka family’s ethos of sharing and integration. “We are fortunate to have enjoyed 60 years of successful commercial and social life, thanks to the Almighty. We have integrated well with the people of Seychelles of all faiths. We want to give back to society and one of the best ways to connect is through food,” said Abdul-Gafoor Yakub, current chairman and managing director of the Chaka Brothers business.
In a meaningful gesture of remembrance and community contribution, two new benches made of cast aluminium have been installed along the Esplanade in Victoria to honour the memory of an elderly Chaka brother, Ismael Chaka, and to mark the family’s continued contribution to public life in the capital. The Chaka family is part of a vibrant Indian-Gujarati merchant tradition that has shaped Seychelles’ commercial history for more than a century. The celebrations continue through the weekend.
