First Lady Champions Women Farmers on Praslin

As part of activities marking 2026 as the United Nations’ “Year for Women Farmers,” First Lady Véronique Herminie visited five women farmers on Praslin on May 3, highlighting their contributions to local agriculture.
The visits, organized in partnership with the Ministry of Fisheries, Agriculture and Blue Economy and Enterprise Seychelles Agency, showcased the diverse agricultural work being undertaken by women across the island.
Among those visited were Laura Germain, who has been farming independently since graduating from the Farmers’ Training Centre, and Marie-Michelle Vidot, who combines 20 years of farming experience with teaching agriculture at Praslin Secondary School.
The farmers shared challenges including access to finance, land development opportunities, and expansion constraints, while demonstrating their resilience and commitment to sustainable local food production.
A bazaar is scheduled for May 5 at Camion Hall, with similar visits planned for Mahé and a forum later in the week under the theme “She grows… she sustains.”
