Twenty-eight join Defence Forces as recruitment continues

Victoria — Twenty-eight recruits were formally inducted as privates into the Seychelles Defence Forces during a passing-out ceremony held Friday morning at the Seychelles Coast Guard Base, Ile Perseverance, marking the completion of three months of intensive training that began in mid-January.
The nineteen men and nine women took their oath of allegiance in front of Commander-in-Chief and President of the Republic, Dr Patrick Herminie; Chief of Defence Forces Major General Michael Rosette; Deputy Chief of Defence Forces Brigadier Jean Atala; Chief of Staff Colonel Michael Olando; senior officers, officers, and family members.
Initially, 41 young prospective soldiers embarked on the demanding journey toward a military career. Through discipline, perseverance, and commitment, 28 successfully completed the training and graduated. Each new private was presented with the national flag patch before reciting the credo of Seychellois soldiers.
Among the graduates, 18-year-old Private Valdano Volcère was named Best Overall Performer. Private Samad Marie was recognized as Best in Practical Studies, while Private Shaddy Botshare earned Best in Academic Studies.
Speaking on behalf of her fellow recruits, Private Fatima Nourrice reflected on their transformation.
“This adventure marked a new stage in our lives, especially during the first six weeks when we transitioned from civilians to soldiers. Training was not easy – we had to work under strict time, cooperate as a team, and put aside our differences.”
She highlighted their participation in a two-week joint exercise with Indian soldiers: “We applied what we had learned — tactics, firearms and other military subjects. We also discovered their culture, religion, and daily life.”
Chief of Defence Forces Major General Michael Rosette welcomed the new privates into the SDF family on behalf of the Commander-in-Chief.
“This passing-out parade marks the first soldier group of the year. You should be proud – many begin this journey, but not all succeed. Remain disciplined, committed, and open to continuous learning. Professionalism, teamwork, and dedication will guide you as you advance within the SDF.”
The ceremony began with a blessing by SDF Chaplain Lieutenant Colonel Deacon Louis Agathine. Now ranked as privates, the recruits will join their chosen units and contribute to the defence of the nation.
The passing-out ceremony represents another chapter in the ongoing recruitment and training efforts by the Seychelles Defence Forces, which continues to seek young Seychellois willing to serve their country in uniform.
Whether the current pace of recruitment is sufficient to meet the operational demands of the SDF, or whether more aggressive recruitment campaigns will be needed, remains a question for military planners. For now, 28 more young people have made the transition from civilian life to military service, taking on the responsibilities and challenges that come with defending the nation.
