Praslin Loses Beloved 103-Year-Old Centenarian Evangeline Joubert
VICTORIA, Seychelles — The community of Praslin and Seychelles as a nation has lost not just a centenarian but a living witness of the country’s history with the passing of Evangeline Joubert, who celebrated her 103rd birthday on January 6 this year. The Praslin centenarian Evangeline Joubert, affectionately known as Madanm Georges or Dada, passed away yesterday morning, leaving behind a legacy that will never be forgotten.
Born on Mahé, Madanm Joubert was a resident of Salazie in the Côte d’Or district of Praslin. She had nine children, four of whom have predeceased her. She was survived by her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, many family members, and numerous friends. Whenever interviewed, she always had stories of the past to share, preserving the oral history of Seychelles.
President Patrick Herminie, on behalf of the Republic, sent a message of comfort and sympathy to the family and close ones of Madam Joubert. In a communiqué released from State House, President Herminie said this loss marks not just the death of an individual but the departure of a true living treasure who kept alive the history, traditions, and collective memory of the nation.
The President described centenarians as holding a special place in Seychellois society because they represent the resilience, wisdom, and enduring spirit of the people. With this departure, the nation has lost stories that cannot be replaced, lessons, knowledge, and the direct link with past generations. Madam Joubert was still able to do almost everything herself except cook, and her caregiver Marinette Passendji said they did not allow her to do that.
Until recently, she was still content and able to take care of herself, with her day starting very early in the morning when she would attend to her own needs. One interesting detail was that she always listened to the radio and could still feed herself. President Herminie shared his sincere condolences with the family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing and loving Madam Joubert.
