Public Sector to Observe Weekly Energy Conservation Day

The Department of Public Administration, in the Office of the President, has announced the introduction of a weekly energy conservation day in the public sector, effective this Friday April 17.
A circular issued yesterday (Monday April 13, 2026) by the department’s principal secretary Fatime Kanté said the initiative is part of the government’s response to current global developments affecting energy supply and fuel cost.
“This measure aims to reduce national electricity consumption, lower fuel usage, and strengthen energy resilience, while ensuring continuity of essential public services,” read the circular.
This applies to all ministries, departments and public sector organisations, which are now required to observe one designated day per week (Friday) as an energy conservation day. On this day, non‑essential physical office operations shall be suspended, public officers shall work remotely where feasible, and essential services shall remain fully operational.
According to the circular, energy conservation measures on this day include air conditioning systems being switched off, non‑essential lighting turned off, office equipment powered down or placed on energy‑saving mode, and buildings secured with minimal energy usage.
Further to the energy conservation day, ministries, departments and public sector organisations are required to implement measures to reduce fuel consumption, including suspension of non‑essential use of government vehicles and minimisation of official travel.
“This measure is expected to significantly reduce daily fuel consumption by limiting commuting and fleet operations,” read the memo.
It also highlights remote work arrangements for accounting officers, who shall identify functions suitable for remote delivery, ensure clear work plans and deliverables are set for staff, and maintain accessibility of services through digital platforms where applicable.
The energy conservation day will be implemented until further notice. During this period, data will be collected in collaboration with Public Utilities Corporation on electricity consumption levels, fuel consumption trends and service delivery performance.
“All ministries, departments and public sector organisations are required to ensure full compliance with this circular. The Department of Public Administration, in coordination with relevant agencies, will monitor implementation and provide further guidance as necessary,” said Ms Kanté.
“This initiative reflects government’s commitment to responsible resource management, national resilience and leadership in sustainable practices. All public officers are encouraged to support this effort and adopt energy‑ and fuel‑saving practices in both their professional and personal capacities,” concluded the circular.
