Chevening Scholars Return to Seychelles Bringing Advanced Skills in Finance and Governance

VICTORIA, Seychelles — Three Chevening scholars have returned to Seychelles after completing fully funded master’s degrees in the United Kingdom, bringing advanced skills to strengthen the country’s financial sector and public service. The Chevening scholars — Clara Tamatave, Aubrey Yocette, and Rudy Sinon — were selected in 2023 for the prestigious Chevening Scholarship and have now spent several months back in Seychelles applying their new knowledge in their respective roles.

The British High Commissioner hosted a reception on February 10 to celebrate their achievements, providing a chance for the returning scholars and Chevening alumni to connect with UK-educated senior officials and cabinet members. British High Commissioner Jeff Glekin commended the three for their dedication, stating the scholars demonstrated a clear commitment to public service and a strong vision for how they would contribute to Seychelles on their return.

The event underscored the UK’s new education strategy, which places stronger emphasis on skills development and sustained collaboration with partner countries like Seychelles. Clare Tamatave, speaking on behalf of the scholars, shared a joint reflection on their year in the UK, noting the programme pushed their boundaries, challenged their thinking, and exposed them to new ways of doing things.

The Chevening Scholarship, fully funded by the UK Government, offers individuals the opportunity to study in the UK on a fully funded scholarship and join a global network of over 58,000 alumni. The British High Commission remains committed to supporting educational exchanges between Seychelles and the UK. Applications for the next Chevening cycle will open later this year, continuing the tradition of empowering future leaders to contribute to their communities.

The returning scholars expressed pride in standing as Seychellois Cheveners and graduates, ready to contribute to Seychelles and honour the commitment that came with this opportunity. They emphasised that while they may have gone far alone, together they can go much further.

Chevening scholarships continue to strengthen Seychelles’ human resource capacity through world-class education.
