New Lanes at Ile du Port Set to Ease Traffic Congestion on Northern Mahé

VICTORIA, Seychelles — The Minister for Transport, Antony Derjacques, has inaugurated the newly constructed lanes at Ile du Port, which have been designed to ease traffic congestion for motorists travelling towards Victoria. The inauguration took place on Thursday after he visited a series of ongoing and completed projects undertaken by the Seychelles Land Transport Agency (SLTA) in several districts in the northern part of Mahé, namely Saint Louis, Mont Buxton, Anse Etoile, Beau Vallon, Bel Ombre, English River and Île Perseverance.

Minister Derjacques was accompanied by the principal secretary for land transport, Patrick Andre, and SLTA’s chief executive, Parinda Herath. During each visit, elected members and district administrators had the opportunity to engage with the minister, highlight the progress of projects, and raise pertinent issues of concern. His first stop was in Belonie, where he inspected the resurfacing project of the Roche Bois road, covering an area of 5,592 square metres at a cost of R1.8m. The minister and his delegation then proceeded to the Belonie phase one new road project, which started in May this year, a 200-metre stretch that includes the construction of stone retaining walls, a bridge, a drainage system and a parking area for residents. He also visited other footpath projects such as the ones near the Baobab Pizzeria, and others in the Bel Ombre district and at La Retraite.

Speaking about the newly constructed road at Ile du Port, Minister Derjacques said: ‘The new road begins with a newly constructed roundabout and ends at the existing one. All the road signs have already been properly installed and the new dual carriageway will carry traffic heading north. The two previous lanes will also remain northbound, while the new lanes will serve the southbound direction.’ He called on members of the public to respect all road signs, adhere to the speed limit of 65 km/h, use the road responsibly and take into account the presence of a nearby school and pedestrians in the area. The project also includes the development of the first race track in Seychelles, with key partners engaged in the delivery of the project and the introduction of bicycle racing being considered.
