Indian Ocean Youth Assembly Convenes at CJSOI Games to Tackle Climate Change

VICTORIA, Seychelles — The Assembly of Youth of the Indian Ocean convened yesterday as part of the 13th CJSOI Games, bringing together young representatives from the seven member countries of the Indian Ocean Commission to address climate change and environmental challenges. The forum was opened by Hibo Moumin Assoweh, president of the CJSOI and Djibouti’s Minister for Youth and Culture.

“We insist on the engagement of young people as actors and a force of proposal for contemporary challenges such as climate change and ecology. We encourage participants to take advantage of the opportunity to propose resolutions and to concern themselves with the future of the planet, because you are the heirs and the transmitters,” she said. The Seychellois delegation, led by Minister for Youth, Sports and Family Marie-Céline Zialor, presented the country’s position on climate action.

The young delegates also heard from Mauritius minister Deven Nagalingum, Madagascar minister Abdulah Marson Moustapha, and the French Ambassador to Seychelles Olivia Berkeley-Christmann. The discussions highlighted the unique vulnerabilities of small island states and the importance of cross-border cooperation in addressing shared environmental challenges. The delegations committed to taking the recommendations back to their respective governments for consideration.
