Plaisance Primary School Marks Pearl Anniversary with Tributes to Founders

VICTORIA, Seychelles — Plaisance primary school proudly marked its 30th anniversary, its Pearl Jubilee, with a celebration honouring past and present teachers, the community and its pupils. The festive event, held on the school grounds, was graced by the presence of the Minister for Education, Dr Justin Valentin, members of the National Assembly, members of the school council and parents. Pupils, dressed smartly and full of excitement, warmly welcomed the invited guests.

Today, Plaisance primary school stands as one of the largest primary schools in Seychelles, with over 1,000 pupils from creche to Primary 6, supported by a team of 113 teaching and non-teaching staff under head teacher Therese Athanase. Ms Athanase paid tribute to head teachers who have helped shape the school’s legacy, naming Odile Octave, Sylvette Raguain, Cyril Pillay, Sabrina Agathine, Daniel Bristol, Gina Domingue and Shirley Pool. She also acknowledged the dedication of long-serving teachers, with special recognition given to five teachers for 30 years of service.

A particularly emotional moment came when Ms Athanase saluted Ms Marie, who is retiring after 45 years of devoted service to the teaching profession. The school’s first head teacher, Ms Octave, delivered a moving speech filled with pride and gratitude, noting that many of the school’s former pupils have gone on to become head teachers, police officers, doctors and nurses. A special tribute was also given to Miss Rita Toussaint, who was surprised by teachers who joined together in song, while Miss Assunta Julienne was honoured for her three decades of service. The event featured vibrant performances by students and teachers, and a plaque honouring all head teachers was unveiled.
