PUC Condemns Vandalism That Cut Water Supply to Several Districts

VICTORIA, Seychelles — The Public Utilities Corporation (PUC) has strongly condemned what it believes to be acts of vandalism along a major water pipeline network. The damage, discovered in the early hours of yesterday morning, caused significant disruption to water supply in several areas of southern Mahé.
Speaking at a press conference yesterday afternoon, PUC’s chief operations officer, Ravin Sunassee, confirmed that the damage was found on pipelines running along the main road from Pointe Au Sel to Anse Faure. “This was a serious incident. We had to divert all of our resources since the damage was quite intense, and there was a lot of water being lost. It took us around four or five hours to repair all of the damage to the pipe,” Mr Sunassee said.
In total, about 20 damaged areas were identified along the pipeline. PUC said it has launched a full investigation and is working with the police to identify those responsible. The corporation also thanked its staff for the rapid response and apologised to affected customers for the inconvenience. PUC has urged the public to report any information about suspicious activity around critical infrastructure, and reminded that damaging public utilities is a criminal offence.
