Seychelles Population Grew by 1.2 Percent in 2024, NBS Reports

VICTORIA, Seychelles — The population of Seychelles continues to grow slowly, according to the latest report from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS). As of December 31, 2024, the total number of people living in the country, including both Seychellois and non-Seychellois, was estimated at 122,038, an increase of 1,455 people or a growth rate of 1.2 percent compared to 2023. The Seychellois population alone was estimated at 101,093, showing a smaller increase of 491 people, or 0.5 percent growth.
In 2024, a total of 1,333 births were registered, a drop from 1,553 in 2023. The crude birth rate fell to 11.0 in 2024, down from 13.0 in 2023. Of the 1,333 births, 250 (19 percent) were within marriage, an increase from 17 percent in 2023, while the proportion of natural births remained constant at 14 percent. The districts with the most births were Persévérance (84), Anse Etoile (77), Au Cap (71) and Anse Aux Pins (67). Teenage births were highest in Mont Fleuri (32 percent), followed by Persévérance (24 percent) and Pointe Larue (22 percent).
The total fertility rate for all residents dropped from 2.0 in 2023 to 1.7 in 2024, and for Seychellois residents only from 2.2 to 1.85. There were 850 deaths registered in 2024, with the crude death rate at 7.0 per 1,000 people. The top causes of death were circulatory system diseases (29 percent), neoplasms or tumours (19 percent) and respiratory system diseases (14 percent). Life expectancy at birth is now 72.1 years for men and 80.7 years for women. In the first half of 2017, there were 186 marriages, but only 16 percent involved residents, and a total of 170 divorces were registered for the year.
