Construction Begins on Service Road Ahead of St Louis Hill Stabilisation Project

VICTORIA, Seychelles — Construction of a new service road is set to commence as of Monday, in preparation for slope stabilisation works at the St Louis Hill. The new service road, which will remain closed to the public, will enable contractors and officials to access the hill and transport materials from below (Serret Road) for the major project. In the long-term, the road will facilitate access for the maintenance of the hill.
Speaking to the national media at the site on Saturday, chief disaster risk officer with the Disaster Risk Management Division (DRMD), Daniel Cetoupe, highlighted the urgency of stabilising the hill, to mitigate the risks of rockfalls and landslides. The St Louis Hill stabilisation is one of several major infrastructure works underway across Mahé to address geological hazards in populated areas.
The DRMD continues to monitor the site, and members of the public are urged to follow official guidance and avoid the construction area for safety reasons. The stabilisation project, once complete, is expected to substantially reduce the risk of future slope failures that have historically affected the lower Serret Road area.
