Eswatini Special Envoy Presents AU Commissioner Candidate to Vice-President Afif

VICTORIA, Seychelles — Vice-President Ahmed Afif received a special envoy of His Majesty King Mswati III of the Kingdom of Eswatini at State House yesterday, as part of the kingdom’s campaign to present its candidate for the position of African Union Commissioner for Agriculture, Rural Development, Blue Economy and Sustainable Environment.

The envoy, H.E. Phila Buthelezi, Minister for Labour and Social Security of Eswatini, was accompanied by the candidate, Hon. Moses Vilakati, a former Minister for Agriculture and for Tourism and Environmental Affairs with more than three decades in the agriculture field. During the meeting, Mr Vilakati set out his commitment to prioritising blue economy initiatives and programmes addressing the challenges faced by African island states.

The Vice-President thanked the envoy and the candidate for visiting Seychelles, and reassured them that the country is carefully assessing the competencies of all candidates and will take a decision in due course. The election of the AU Commissioner will take place in February 2025 during the African Union Summit in Addis Ababa. Eswatini and Seychelles established diplomatic relations in March 2002 and have since signed a number of memoranda covering trade and pensions.
