Antoinette Barrack Marks 106th Birthday with Presidential Visit

VICTORIA, Seychelles — Antoinette Barrack, the doyenne of Seychelles, celebrated her 106th birthday on January 8 at the Blue Hill Hotel in Sans Soucis, in an atmosphere marked by warmth and reverence. The occasion was dignified by a surprise visit from President Wavel Ramkalawan, accompanied by First Lady Linda Ramkalawan, and was attended by official representatives and members of her large family.
Mrs Barrack, originally from the Cascade district, was visibly moved by the gesture, having earlier expressed her wish to receive a visit from the head of state. With a bright smile she responded to the simple but sincere sign of benevolence: “Ou a respe mwan prezan.” Speaking later, she thanked everyone who had made the moment possible and underlined the importance of family in her long life.
The celebration was marked by symbolic gifts from the Ministry of Local Government and Community Affairs, the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Family, her district administration, and the elected member for the National Assembly, a reflection of the respect her longevity and community impact continue to command. President Ramkalawan offered his own words of blessing, praising her energy and praying that she continue to bring happiness to those around her.
Mrs Barrack is the mother of three, grandmother of nine, great-grandmother of 11, and great-great-grandmother of five. She lives with her daughter Jemma Barrack, who has cared for her for the past 63 years, and remains active, still doing small household chores such as sweeping and washing up.
