Health Care Agency Launches 50000 Steps for Diabetes Challenge

VICTORIA, Seychelles — As part of activities leading up to World Diabetes Day, celebrated on November 14, the Health Care Agency has launched the ‘50,000 Steps for Diabetes Challenge’, a nationwide initiative aimed at promoting healthier lifestyles and raising awareness on diabetes prevention. The campaign is in line with this year’s global theme ‘Diabetes and Wellbeing’.

The challenge invites Seychellois of all ages to accumulate 50,000 steps over the coming days, either individually or in teams, and to share their progress on social media using a dedicated hashtag. Participants are encouraged to walk during their daily routines, at lunch breaks, in the evenings, or as part of group outings, with the aim of combining physical activity with greater public awareness of diabetes and its risk factors.

According to the Health Care Agency, diabetes remains one of the most common non-communicable diseases in Seychelles, and lifestyle changes such as regular physical activity, balanced diets, and routine health checks are central to prevention and management. Officials noted that the campaign also seeks to encourage families to engage in active pastimes together and to reduce the time spent on sedentary activities. World Diabetes Day is marked globally every year on November 14, the birthday of Sir Frederick Banting, who co-discovered insulin.
