Police Launch Crackdown on Rising Wave of Scooter Thefts

VICTORIA, Seychelles — The Seychelles Police Force has announced a major crackdown on vehicle crime after reporting more than 25 scooter, motorcycle, and vehicle thefts in the first four months of 2026. The figure represents a significant increase compared to the same period in previous years, prompting law enforcement to deploy additional resources and adopt new investigative techniques.

According to police spokespersons, the operation will target known hotspots for vehicle crime and focus on both prevention and recovery of stolen vehicles. Increased patrols will be deployed in residential and commercial areas, with particular attention to locations where thefts have been reported frequently. The police have also appealed to the public to take basic security precautions, including using steering locks and parking in well-lit areas.

According to the police, investigations have identified patterns in the thefts, with many occurring in similar circumstances and locations. The force is working with the customs and immigration services to track stolen vehicles that may be moved off the islands. Members of the public with information about vehicle crime have been urged to come forward, with assurances of confidentiality and potential rewards for information leading to convictions.

The crackdown forms part of a broader community safety strategy that includes engagement with neighbourhood watch groups, business owners, and transport operators. Police have emphasised that tackling vehicle crime requires cooperation between law enforcement and the community. The operation will be reviewed regularly, with adjustments made based on emerging patterns and feedback from the public.
