Cabinet Approves Major Relief for Elderly Housing Contribution Payments

VICTORIA, Seychelles — Elderly housing contribution requirements are set to change dramatically this month following a Cabinet decision that will bring significant relief to vulnerable residents across the nation. The Ministry of Local Government and Inner Islands announced that the policy revision was approved to balance the financial needs of elderly residents with the sustainability of care services. Elderly housing contribution policies have long been a concern for those living on fixed incomes.

This development matters enormously to ordinary Seychellois families who have struggled to meet monthly mandatory contributions while managing rising costs of living. Many elderly residents on Praslin and other islands live on limited pensions, and this policy change will allow them to allocate their limited resources toward other essential needs such as healthcare and nutrition. The government has recognised that sustainable care must not come at the expense of dignified living standards.

According to the announcement, the decision was made with financial considerations in mind to protect vulnerable elderly residents while ensuring they continue to receive sustainable care and support services. The policy changes affect residents in government housing schemes who have been required to make monthly contributions toward maintenance and service costs. Local administrators have been instructed to implement the new contribution schedules immediately.

Seychelles has approximately 9,000 residents aged 65 and over, representing about 10 percent of the population. The government has progressively expanded social protection programmes for this demographic, including pension increases and healthcare access improvements. This latest policy revision aligns with international best practices for protecting vulnerable elderly populations from housing cost burdens.

The Ministry will monitor implementation of the new contribution framework and may make further adjustments based on feedback from district administrators and residents. Public information campaigns will ensure all affected elderly residents understand their revised obligations and entitlements under the new system.

This policy change demonstrates government’s commitment to protecting its most vulnerable citizens.
