Seychelles Launches Task Force to Protect Assomption and Aldabra Islands

VICTORIA, Seychelles — The government of Seychelles is establishing an inter-sectoral environmental task force to safeguard the nation’s sovereign rights and protect its islands, particularly Assomption and Aldabra. The Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, Energy and Natural Resources (MECENR) is coordinating this initiative, which aims to fulfil constitutional responsibilities while engaging stakeholders including NGOs, civil society, and the private sector.

The task force will operate in a transparent and inclusive manner, supporting informed participation and evidence-based decision-making. Its mandate includes conducting a comprehensive biodiversity assessment and strengthening biosecurity planning and measures for the islands. The government intends for the task force to ensure that actions align with national policy and principles of good governance.

Chaired by the Minister for Environment, Climate Change, Energy and Natural Resources, with Dr Nirmal Shah serving as deputy chair, the task force will include chief executives from the Islands Development Company (IDC), Seychelles Islands Foundation (SIF), and the Planning Authority (PS Lands). Representatives from Biosecurity and selected MECENR technical officers will attend as observers.

Assomption and Aldabra hold significant ecological importance for Seychelles. Aldabra is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the world’s largest atolls, while Assomption has faced environmental challenges including invasive species and habitat degradation. Protecting these islands is crucial for maintaining Seychelles’ biodiversity and meeting international conservation commitments.

The establishment of the task force follows growing recognition of the need for coordinated approaches to environmental management. By bringing together key stakeholders including the private sector and civil society, the government aims to ensure that protection measures are both effective and sustainable. The task force will also be responsible for structured engagement with all relevant parties.

The initiative represents a strengthened commitment to environmental stewardship in Seychelles.
