Starlink Satellite Internet Service Launches in Seychelles

VICTORIA, Seychelles — Starlink satellite internet service has officially launched in Seychelles, bringing high-speed broadband connectivity to homes, businesses, and institutions across the islands. The launch represents a major step forward in the country’s efforts to expand digital access and to ensure that all Seychellois can benefit from modern telecommunications services.

According to the Department of Information Communications Technology, the introduction of Starlink will complement existing fixed and mobile networks, providing additional capacity and resilience, particularly for remote areas and outer islands. The service is expected to support a wide range of applications including remote work, online education, telemedicine, and digital government services. Officials said the launch reflects the government’s commitment to universal, high-quality connectivity.

According to the service provider, Starlink uses a constellation of low-earth orbit satellites to deliver broadband internet with low latency, making it suitable for applications that have traditionally required fibre or cable connections. The service can be deployed quickly, including in locations where terrestrial infrastructure is challenging or uneconomic to build. Initial coverage is available across Mahe, Praslin, and La Digue, with expansion to outer islands planned.

The introduction of Starlink is expected to enhance competition in the telecommunications market and to drive improvements in service quality and pricing. Officials said the move aligns with the national digital strategy, which prioritises connectivity as a foundation for economic development, social inclusion, and innovation. Training and support will be provided to help users get the most out of the new service, with particular attention to vulnerable and underserved communities.
