Seychelles Foreign Minister Advocates for Maritime Prosperity at the 2026 Raisina Dialogue

The Seychelles Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Diaspora, Ambassador Barry Faure, delivered a compelling vision for the future of the Indian Ocean during his high-level participation in the 11th edition of the Raisina Dialogue in New Delhi.

Speaking at a flagship session titled “Heart of the Seas: The Future of the Indian Ocean,” moderated by renowned Indian journalist Ms. Palika Sharma, Ambassador Faure underscored the critical role of small island developing states (SIDS) in maintaining regional stability. The Minister emphasized that for Seychelles, the Indian Ocean is not merely a geographic space but the lifeblood of its national economy and security.

During the panel, Ambassador Faure highlighted the necessity of collective action in addressing maritime challenges, ranging from non-traditional security threats like piracy and illegal fishing to the existential risks posed by climate change. He lauded the deep-rooted partnership between Seychelles and India.

“The future of the Indian Ocean depends on our ability to transform shared challenges into shared opportunities,” stated Ambassador Faure. “Through enhanced digital connectivity, sustainable ‘Blue Economy’ practices, and robust security frameworks like the Colombo Security Conclave, we are ensuring that the ‘Heart of the Seas’ remains a zone of peace and prosperity for generations to come.”

Minister of Foreign Affairs from India (Dr Jayashankar), Sri Lanka (Vijitha Herath) and Mauritius (Dhananjay Ramful), and the Former Minister of Australia (Marise Payne) also participated in the panel discussion.

The Minister’s participation comes at a pivotal time in Seychelles-India relations, following the recent launch of the SESEL (Sustainability, Economic Growth, and Security through Enhanced Linkages) vision. This joint framework focuses on modernization, capacity building, and people-centric development.

Ambassador Faure’s visit to India further cements the multifaceted ties between the two nations, reinforcing Seychelles’ position as a proactive leader in Indian Ocean diplomacy.
