VICTORIA, Seychelles — The Seychelles Fisheries Authority, in collaboration with the department of Fisheries, officially launched this year’s Fisheries Week celebrations with a significant tree-planting event on Monday morning in Anse à la Mouche. The activity took place close to the designated area for an upcoming fishing facility project, which aims to enhance local fishing practices while maintaining the level of standard required.
The event brought together representatives from the Seychelles Fisheries Authority (SFA), the department of Fisheries, the department of Environment, local fishers, including members of the Anse Boileau Fishers Association. Students from the Wildlife Clubs of Baie Lazare and Anse Boileau primary schools participated enthusiastically, helping to instil a sense of responsibility for the environment in the younger generation. The Minister for Fisheries, Agriculture and the Blue Economy, Wallace Cosgrow; SFA’s chief executive, Dr Jan Robinson; deputy chief executive Aubrey Lesperance; principal secretary for Fisheries Roy Clarisse; and Neville Bonnelame of the fishers association planted the first trees, to launch the activity.
Fisheries Week 2025 aims to promote environmental sustainability and foster community engagement around the fisheries sector. A series of activities has been planned across the islands, including school outreach, fisher trainings, exhibitions, and awareness campaigns. Officials noted that the tree-planting activity reflects the sector’s commitment to balancing development with environmental protection, and to ensuring that future generations of Seychellois fishers can continue to practise their trade in healthy marine and coastal ecosystems.
