Minister Rangasamy Marks World Habitat Day with Call for Resilient Cities
VICTORIA, Seychelles — Minister for Lands and Housing, Keven Rangasamy, has used the occasion of World Habitat Day, observed globally on Monday October 6, 2025, to call for the development of more resilient, safer and inclusive cities that guarantee safety and belonging for all.
Speaking on the theme, the minister noted that this year’s commemoration serves as a reminder that cities and communities must be designed to withstand the pressures of rapid urbanisation, climate change and growing social inequalities. He emphasised that building resilient cities requires long-term planning, strong partnerships, and the active participation of citizens.
‘Together, let us continue to build more resilient, safer, and inclusive cities that guarantee safety and belonging for all. As we commemorate this important day, we are reminded of our shared responsibility to ensure that urban growth benefits every citizen, leaves no one behind, and protects the natural environment that sustains us,’ Minister Rangasamy said.
World Habitat Day is observed annually on the first Monday of October. It was designated by the United Nations to reflect on the state of towns and cities, and on the basic right of all to adequate shelter. It also aims to remind people that everyone has the power and responsibility to shape the future of their cities and towns.
