Agricultural and Food Fair Returns After Years of Absence

VICTORIA, Seychelles — The Foire de l’Agriculture et de l’Alimentation returned to the Roche Caïman sports complex over the weekend of June 28 to 29, drawing large crowds despite morning rain on both days. Some 140 local exhibitors, including small farmers, fisherfolk and food producers, took part in the two-day event, which formed part of the 49th Independence Anniversary celebrations.

Principal Minister Jean-François Ferrari, who chairs the National Celebrations Committee, paid tribute to small farmers and entrepreneurs, and praised the fishing sector for its efforts towards sustainable solutions. Agriculture and Environment Minister Flavien Joubert, for his part, reminded the public of the climate challenges facing the country and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting producers.

Visitors bought plants, herbs and vegetables, while children took part in a mobile garden competition involving 19 Mahé schools and four from Praslin and La Digue. A creative bazaar of food stalls, traditional dishes and live music from DJ Fady rounded out the programme. Fair coordinator Antoine Marie Moustache said the event aimed to encourage healthier lifestyles and stronger links between local producers and the community.
