VICTORIA, Seychelles — Seychelles has joined the global community in commemorating Orange Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness of gender-based violence, with a focus on violence against women and girls. The observance forms part of the UNiTE by 2030 to End Violence against Women campaign, launched by the United Nations secretary-general in 2008. Orange, the campaign’s signature colour, is a bright and optimistic symbol of hope for a future free from violence.
In Seychelles, Orange Day was officially introduced in September 2010 under the theme ‘Unite for Peace: End Gender-Based Violence’. Since its launch, the Family department has been leading nationwide efforts to educate communities, support survivors, and promote gender equality through school programmes, advocacy campaigns and counselling services. Gabriella Hoareau, programme officer at the Family department, highlighted the mission behind the campaign, saying the department wants Orange Day to truly reflect the work it does in advocacy and awareness, and to honour those who have experienced domestic violence.
The Counselling and Psychotherapy (C&P) Unit, a key player in these efforts, has provided direct support to victims of domestic violence. Statistics show a steady increase in demand for these services: 40 clients in 2021 (April–December), 38 in 2022, 45 in 2023, 67 in 2024, and 15 women already recorded in 2025 (January–May). To address this growing need, the department plans to scale up services in 2025, including expanding outreach in schools and communities, training more counsellors, and strengthening collaboration with healthcare workers, HR departments and the police.
