Willy Thérésine, Seychelles’ Only Male Centenarian, Turns 101

VICTORIA, Seychelles — Willy Thérésine, the only male centenarian in Seychelles, celebrated his 101st birthday in a heartwarming gathering at his residence in Forêt Noire on Saturday. The special day was marked by a memorable surprise as President Wavel Ramkalawan and First Lady Linda Ramkalawan turned up at his residence to wish him a joyful happy birthday. Also in attendance were the elected member for Mont Fleuri in the National Assembly Hon. Michel Roucou, director general for Community Affairs Denise Clarisse, district administrator for Mont Fleuri Steve Noël, family and friends.
Mr Thérésine also received a blessing from President Ramkalawan. Moreover, he was presented with bouquets of flowers, cake and hampers from the Ministry of Local Government and Community Affairs and the Mont Fleuri district. The visit by the Head of State to a centenarian is part of a long-standing tradition in Seychelles in which the President personally acknowledges the contribution of the country’s oldest citizens to the nation’s social fabric.
Speaking to local media after the visit, district administrator Steve Noël noted that Mr Thérésine is a beloved figure in the Mont Fleuri community and a regular participant in district activities. “We are honoured to have him in our district. He represents a living link with the history of Seychelles and a source of wisdom for younger generations.” Mr Thérésine is the country’s only male centenarian and one of a small but growing number of Seychellois men and women aged 100 and above. His longevity has been attributed by his family to a simple life, regular walks, and a sense of humour that has not dimmed with the years.
