Secondary Students Take Part in First Art Mentorship Programme

VICTORIA, Seychelles — Secondary 4 and 5 students who are passionate about art and design took part in a mentorship programme yesterday morning aimed at expanding their understanding of various facets of arts and crafts. The first-ever programme by the National Arts and Crafts Council at the Carrefour des Arts gallery featured renowned local artist Danny Sopha as the students’ mentor, with the participation of five different schools.
The session included animated discussion and interactive activities on all aspects of the arts between the students and Mr Sopha, with the latter sharing his experience throughout his artistic career. Following the discussion, three students expressed their views about the experience. Among them was Josiah Ntep, from Perseverance secondary school, who conveyed his gratitude to the organisers for giving him such an opportunity. ‘Art has always been a passion of mine, and being mentored by one of our local artists is a privilege,’ he shared. This was echoed by his peer Ishmael Lavigne, also from Perseverance secondary, who said the session might help him to become more receptive and observant of artistic symbols and elements.
English River student Auriel Raoul, who is pursuing her Cambridge International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) in art and design, also appreciated the mentoring session and believes more students should be given such opportunity. ‘I believe that artists like Mr Sopha have much to contribute to our understanding of art and personally, it has enhanced my comprehension of the subject,’ she said. Mikhella Adrienne, a representative of the council, said the council is confident this initiative will enhance students’ connection to the arts and expand their understanding of the field.
