Three Men Detained for Drug Importation and Trafficking Offences

VICTORIA, Seychelles — Three men remain in police detention for ten days on suspicion of drug importation, conspiracy to import a controlled drug, and conspiracy to traffic a controlled drug. The suspects — a 32-year-old and a 30-year-old from La Gogue and a 32-year-old from Beau Vallon — were arrested on Friday at Port after they had come ashore from a cargo vessel. They were found to be in possession of what police believe to be a controlled substance.

The arrests form part of ongoing efforts by the Seychelles Police to disrupt the trafficking of illegal substances through the country’s ports. The investigation is being led by officers of the drug enforcement division, who continue to pursue leads and gather evidence. The suspects are expected to appear before a magistrate once the investigation reaches the appropriate stage.

Drug trafficking has been a persistent concern for Seychelles given its geographic position as an archipelago in the western Indian Ocean, with its ports and coastline presenting both opportunities and challenges for law enforcement. The Police have over the years intensified cooperation with international partners, including the Indian Ocean Commission and the East African Community, to share intelligence and coordinate action against transnational drug networks. The latest arrests underscore the importance of vigilance at the country’s points of entry and the need for sustained investment in the capacity of enforcement agencies.
