President Ramkalawan Calls for Blue Economy and Marine Conservation Role in Energy Transition at ADSW 2025
VICTORIA, Seychelles — President Wavel Ramkalawan has used his platform at the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW) 2025 to argue that the blue economy and marine conservation must be central to the global shift towards sustainable energy. He delivered the keynote at a high-level dialogue on ‘Harnessing Blue Economy and Marine Conservation for Sustainable Energy Transition’, held alongside other heads of state and government at the summit.
In his address, the President highlighted Seychelles’ achievements in marine protected areas and innovative blue finance mechanisms, including the world’s first sovereign blue bond, as well as efforts to reduce reliance on fossil fuels through renewable energy. “Small island developing states like Seychelles are on the frontline of climate change, yet we are also pioneering solutions that demonstrate the immense potential of the blue economy,” he said.
The President called for enhanced international cooperation, capacity-building and investment to help nations use their marine resources sustainably. He reaffirmed Seychelles’ commitment to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy) and SDG 14 (Life Below Water). His participation at the summit is being read in Victoria as part of a wider diplomatic push in the opening weeks of 2025.
