Work to Remove Dangerous Boulder in Le Niole Starts Tomorrow
VICTORIA, Seychelles, Work to remove a boulder in Le Niole, seen as a potential danger to public and infrastructure in the area, will start tomorrow, Wednesday February 21, 2024, as from 8am. The announcement was made yesterday afternoon by chief risk management officer Daniel Cétoupe during a press briefing on the matter held at the headquarters of the Disaster Risk Management Division (DRMD), Mont Fleuri. Two families in the vicinity have already been evacuated as a precaution.
Also present were representatives of various agencies involved in the operation, including the Ministry of Local Government and Community Affairs (MLGCA), Seychelles Police, Seychelles Infrastructure Agency (SIA), among others. The multi-agency response reflects the seriousness with which the authorities are treating the threat. Each group has been assigned specific responsibilities to ensure the operation runs smoothly and safely.
The boulder was exposed following the torrential rainfall in the northern region on December 7, last year. It is located right before the bus turning point, making it a particular hazard for both pedestrians and vehicles in the area. The exposed rock has been a source of concern for residents, who have been calling for action to remove the danger before it causes harm.
Work to break down the boulder will take place every day until 4.30pm and the operation will go on for six weeks until April 3, 2024. The extended timeline reflects the careful approach being taken to dismantle the boulder without causing further damage to surrounding infrastructure. The DRMD has asked residents to keep clear of the area during the work hours for their own safety.
Mr Cétoupe explained that the boulder poses a real risk to public safety, particularly during heavy rains when loose material could be washed down the slope. He urged members of the public to follow the directions of the security personnel on site and to avoid the area unless absolutely necessary. The operation is being closely monitored and updates will be provided as the work progresses.
