30 Youth and Adults Living with Disabilities Complete Skills Workshops in Victoria

VICTORIA, Seychelles — Thirty young people and adults living with disabilities received their certificates in an emotion-filled ceremony at the Vocational Training Centre in North East Point on Friday, after completing a series of workshops organised by Beatitudes Seychelles, a non-governmental organisation whose main objective is to help people with special needs. The Women of Seychelles Inspiring Transformative Actions (WOSITA) Foundation also joined in to provide support.

Chairperson of Beatitudes Seychelles, Marie-May Leon, said the activities were made possible through the national grant. ‘The youth and adults thoroughly enjoyed the activities. People living with disabilities often face major challenges in finding employment. Through these workshops, they are learning new skills that can help them earn a living. This is only the beginning,’ Mrs Leon said. Maryvonne Pool, consul of Seychelles for Tanzania and co-founder of the WOSITA Foundation, was visibly moved as she addressed those present, noting that Tanzania has several similar workshops and centres, and that WOSITA would explore sending two people from Seychelles to visit similar institutions in Tanzania.

Mrs Pool also announced a donation of R10,000 through the WOSITA Foundation to support future activities. Representing the family department, principal secretary Mike Morel congratulated Beatitudes Seychelles and thanked all who have contributed towards the initiative. ‘Today we celebrate not only achievements, but the spirit of care and service that strengthens our families and our community. A special thank you to Mrs Leon and her team, whose efforts have brought much-needed relief, understanding, and compassion to families and caregivers in our community,’ Mr Morel said.

Marco Gerry, who is responsible for programmes at the family department, added that similar sessions will continue at the Vocational Training Centre in November and December, and encouraged parents to contact Beatitudes Seychelles or the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Family to register their children.
