VICTORIA, Seychelles — Diwali, the festival of lights celebrated by millions of people across the world, was also marked in Seychelles at the weekend with a vibrant gathering that brought together members of the Indian community, friends and well-wishers. The celebration, held at the Sri Sathya Sai Centre in the presence of diplomats, dignitaries and members of the public, captured the spirit of the festival: the triumph of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, and good over evil.
Traditional lamps were lit, prayer ceremonies were held, and cultural performances showcased the music, dance and cuisine of India. Speeches by representatives of the community highlighted the importance of Diwali as a moment of reflection, gratitude and renewal, and stressed the values of family, friendship and unity that the festival promotes.
Organisers said the celebration was an opportunity for Seychellois of all backgrounds to come together, share in the joy of the festival and strengthen the bonds between cultures. The event concluded with the sharing of traditional sweets, gifts for the children and a sumptuous meal that brought the evening to a close on a warm and festive note.
