UK’s Eden Project Celebrates Rare Coco de Mer Milestone in Cornwall

VICTORIA, Seychelles — A coco de mer palm from Seychelles has made history in the United Kingdom by producing what is thought to be the largest mature leaf of its kind across the United Kingdom, at the Eden Project’s Rainforest Biome in Cornwall.

The coco de mer, which is native to Praslin and Curieuse, was planted at the Eden Project after a seed was gifted by the Seychelles Ministry of Agriculture in 2003. More than two decades later, the palm has developed a mature leaf measuring around four metres (13 feet) in length. Over the next ten years, the leaf is expected to keep growing, with the possibility of reaching between eight and ten metres long, according to experts at the Eden Project.

It is thought to be the first time a coco de mer leaf has reached maturity in the United Kingdom. The milestone highlights the conservation work undertaken by the Eden Project’s horticulture team, as well as the close botanical ties between Seychelles and the UK.

The Eden Project said the achievement reinforces the importance of biodiversity conservation and international cooperation on plant species. Seychelles conservationists welcomed the news, noting that the successful growth of the coco de mer in Cornwall demonstrates the resilience of the species and supports efforts to raise awareness about the unique flora of the inner islands.
