Seychelles and UNDRR Collaborate to Strengthen Disaster Risk Management and Early Warning

VICTORIA, Seychelles — Seychelles and the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction, UNDRR, are collaborating to enhance the country’s disaster risk management capacity and early warning systems. The partnership, announced this week, aims to strengthen national preparedness for natural and man-made hazards, including cyclones, floods and tsunamis.

Speaking at the launch of the collaboration, officials from the Department of Risk and Disaster Management, DDM, and UNDRR emphasised the importance of building resilient communities and ensuring that early warning systems reach all segments of the population. The collaboration will include training programmes, simulation exercises and the development of national disaster risk reduction strategies aligned with the Sendai Framework.

Seychelles, as a small island developing state, is particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, including sea level rise, coastal erosion and more frequent extreme weather events. The partnership with UNDRR is expected to enhance the country’s ability to prepare for, respond to and recover from disasters, contributing to the protection of lives, livelihoods and critical infrastructure. The collaboration will also support the implementation of the country’s national disaster risk reduction strategy.
