VICTORIA, Seychelles — Bodybuilder Wallace Dorasamy has been named Sportsman of the Year 2024 at the Sports Awards ceremony held at the Berjaya Beau Vallon Bay Resort and Casino on Saturday night, repeating a feat achieved by his father, former footballer Bernard Dorasamy, 37 years ago in 1988. The award was presented by President Wavel Ramkalawan, with the First Lady and Vice-President Ahmed Afif also in attendance.
Young swimmer Aaliyah Palestrini took the women’s title, replacing fellow swimmer Felicity Passon as best senior female athlete. World Junior U-16 kata champion Samuel Fanny from Kyokushin Ryu Karate was voted best young male athlete, and weightlifter Sharyna Anthony was named best young female athlete. The Sports Minister, Marie-Celine Zialor, extended her congratulations to all the nominees and winners.
She noted that the event was a celebration of hard work and commitment during 2024 and urged the athletes to use their success as testimony of the rewards that sport brings. Sports, the minister said, has the power to spread positivity in our communities and take over space where negative activities occupy. The ceremony was attended by cabinet ministers, senior government officials, parents, family members and sponsors.
