Education Minister Inspects Anse Royale Youth Hostel Ahead of New Academic Year
VICTORIA, Seychelles — Anse Royale youth hostel facilities were inspected yesterday by Minister for Education and Human Resource Development David Pierre, who toured the facility to assess its condition and discuss ongoing improvements. The visit allowed the minister and his delegation to review preparations for welcoming new students for the upcoming academic year.
This matters to ordinary Seychellois families who send their children to Mahé for secondary education from outer islands. The Youth Hostel provides essential accommodation for students from Praslin, La Digue, and other islands who cannot commute daily. Ensuring proper living conditions directly impacts educational outcomes and the wellbeing of young people far from home.
Before the tour, Minister Pierre met with hostel staff, where he listened to their concerns and suggestions. Staff members shared experiences and challenges, highlighting the need for continuous maintenance and renovations to keep the hostel suitable for new students. They emphasised the importance of improving living conditions to ease students’ transition from home to hostel life. Director Roger Alphonse confirmed the facility can accommodate up to 176 students, with about 70 spaces currently available.
The Youth Hostel at Anse Royale has historically served as a crucial support system for students from outer islands seeking education on Mahé. Following the decision that Praslin students will no longer attend Vijay International School, projections show increased intake that will place greater demand on the hostel’s capacity and resources. This policy change necessitates significant preparation to ensure adequate facilities.
Discussions addressed anticipated rise in student intake, with staff also raising salary-related concerns and the impact of remuneration on morale and retention. Minister Pierre explained that the purpose of the visit was to ensure the hostel is prepared to welcome the new cohort and identify areas requiring ministry support. He assured that the ministry is aware of specific improvements required to provide sufficient space and amenities.
The ministry remains committed to creating a conducive environment where students feel comfortable continuing their studies.
