Cabinet Approves Air Seychelles A321XLR Fleet Strategy for Long-Haul Expansion
VICTORIA, Seychelles — The Cabinet of Ministers has approved the International Long-Haul Fleet Strategy for Air Seychelles, which includes leasing two Airbus A321XLR aircraft to enable the national carrier’s expansion into European markets. Minister for Transport, Ports and Civil Aviation Veronique Laporte announced the decision during a press briefing held at Botanical House on Friday, outlining the government’s vision for a more sustainable and efficient national airline.
The A321XLR was selected over the Airbus A330-900neo due to stronger projected profitability, operational efficiency, and compatibility with Air Seychelles’ existing fleet infrastructure. The two leased aircraft are expected to be delivered within two to two-and-a-half years, targeting operational readiness between 2028 and 2029. The acquisition will be structured through an operating lease arrangement, requiring no immediate capital investment from the state.
The minister emphasised that retaining an efficient national carrier ensures visitor flows and resulting economic benefits are not entirely dependent on foreign airlines. She noted that Air Seychelles serves as the country’s national insurance policy against global disruptions like those experienced during the Covid-19 pandemic. The A321XLR offers a balanced solution in terms of capacity, range, and cost-efficiency, enabling non-stop flights to key European markets while maintaining lower operating costs.
To address concerns about passenger comfort, Air Seychelles plans to configure the aircraft with long-haul premium features, including fully flat beds in Business Class and modern in-flight entertainment systems. Compatibility with the current fleet will also reduce costs for pilot training, spare parts, and engineering maintenance. The government is additionally proposing the construction of an emergency alternate airport on Coëtivy Island to maximise commercial potential.
The minister revealed that Air Seychelles management and staff implemented a temporary four-month salary reduction to help the airline navigate the high-cost environment, though a planned salary increase scheduled for April has been postponed until later in the year. Qatar Airways is expected to resume services on June 16, with discussions underway to increase frequencies to two daily flights. Minister Laporte is scheduled to meet representatives of LOT Polish Airlines in Poland next week to encourage direct connectivity.
The government is working with stakeholders to finalise an airport development concept and financing framework before year-end.
