Seychelles Seeks Enhanced Connectivity Amid Global Transport Crisis

Transport, Ports and Civil Aviation Minister Veronique Laporte participated in the International Transport and Logistics Forum in St. Petersburg, Russia, from April 1‑3, joining ministers and stakeholders from across the globe to discuss connectivity and cooperation. The forum offered Seychelles a timely platform to strengthen partnerships and explore avenues for improved logistical links – a priority given the ongoing crisis in the Middle East region.

On the sidelines of the event, Minister Laporte met with the chief minister for Transport of the Russian Federation, H.E. Mr V.V. Poteshkin, accompanied by Seychelles Ports Authority director of strategic business development Lynze Marimba. Such bilateral engagements are crucial for an island nation whose economic vitality depends heavily on reliable air and sea linkages.

The current geopolitical turmoil in the Middle East has underscored the fragility of international supply chains, making diversification of routes and partners a strategic imperative for Seychelles. Laporte’s presence in St. Petersburg reflects a proactive effort to position the archipelago within emerging transport networks that could mitigate reliance on traditional corridors.

Analysts observe that Seychelles’ logistical resilience hinges not only on physical infrastructure but also on diplomatic agility. By engaging directly with Russian transport authorities – alongside other global counterparts – the ministry signals a pragmatic approach to securing the nation’s trade and tourism lifelines. In an interconnected world where disruptions ripple rapidly across oceans, such forum‑level diplomacy may prove as vital as harbour upgrades or runway extensions.
