Seychelles and Canada discuss climate action, heritage cooperation and bilateral agreements

The High Commissioner-designate of Canada, H.E. Mrs. Emily Burns, paid a courtesy call on the Minister for Foreign Affairs and the Diaspora, Mr. Barry Faure, on February 23 2026 at Maison Queau de Quinssy, ahead of her Accreditation Ceremony.

During the meeting, Minister Faure commended Canada for their continued commitment to international climate action to support the goals of the Paris Agreement, with the aim of mitigating the effects of climate change.

Minister Faure also expressed his hopes to have exchanges between Canadian heritage management experts and the Seychellois team working on securing the inscription of the ‘Venns Town’ site as Seychelles’ first cultural UNESCO World Heritage site, citing that Seychelles would greatly benefit from the Canadian expertise.

The finalisation of a Bilateral Air Services Agreement, which would reflect both countries’ strong commitment to deepening bilateral aviation cooperation, as well as the conclusion of a Visa Waiver Agreement between Seychelles and Canada were also touched on.

High Commissioner-designate Burns expressed her eagerness to work with the Seychelles on the points brought forward by Minister Faure and commended the Seychelles’ global standard setting in the field of Blue Economy.

Their discussions also centered on trade within the region, maritime security, as well as candidatures.
