Victoria Market Renovation Begins as Sir Selwyn Clark Revamp Approved
VICTORIA, Seychelles — Victoria market renovation is set to commence as the Agriculture Department, in collaboration with the Seychelles Infrastructure Agency (SIA), confirmed yesterday that demolition of the iconic Sir Selwyn Selwyn Clark Market will begin by the end of January. The briefing was held at the Agriculture Department conference room to update vendors and stakeholders on the project timeline.
This matters to ordinary Seychellois who rely on the market for fresh produce, fish, and daily necessities. The modernised facility will offer improved sanitation, better vendor organisation, and enhanced shopping experiences for thousands of residents who visit Victoria Market each week. Fish vendors, however, will not return to the market as they are satisfied with their current location at the former STC supermarket.
Market manager Vincent Germain explained that delays had occurred, particularly around the relocation of vendors from the former STC supermarket. Following consultations in November 2025, it was confirmed that fish vendors would remain at their current location, eliminating complications with the drainage system that had drawn frequent complaints. SIA chief executive Jitesh Shah noted that the relocation allowed for a more comprehensive renovation than originally planned.
The Sir Selwyn Selwyn Clark Market has been a cornerstone of Victoria’s commercial life for decades, serving as the primary hub for fresh produce, meat, and flowers. Previous attempts to renovate while maintaining operations had caused water ingress issues and structural concerns. The decision to fully relocate vendors temporarily enables contractors to complete thorough structural improvements without compromising safety.
The redesigned market will feature a new roof whilst preserving cultural elements, with the aim of retaining the market’s original character but with a modern façade and upgraded internal facilities. A new system for classifying vendor tables will accommodate more sellers. Although a budget had been set, recent reviews revealed higher costs than initially anticipated, with All Weather Builders confirmed as the contractor.
The renovated market promises to serve Victoria’s shoppers for generations to come.
