National Assembly Approves Supplementary Budget with Net R517 Million Cut
VICTORIA, Seychelles — The National Assembly of Seychelles has approved a supplementary budget of R452,246,772.64 and a budget cut of R969,431,988.73, resulting in a net budget cut of R517,185,216.08 for the year 2025. The motion was tabled by leader of government business Sylvanne Lemiel in accordance with Article 154(6)(b) of the Constitution.
The motion was approved by 16 votes in favour, with no votes against and 11 abstentions. Hon. Lemiel explained that the budget cut represents appropriated funds that were not spent between January and June 2025 by the relevant ministries, departments, and agencies. The supplementary appropriation covers commitments the government is seeking to settle in the second half of the financial year, while the corresponding cut reflects slower-than-expected drawdowns on existing allocations.
The approval of the supplementary budget signals continued fiscal discipline, with the government reallocating unspent resources to priority areas while remaining within its overall 2025 fiscal envelope. The Treasury will now be able to release funds for the approved items without exceeding the original expenditure ceiling approved at the start of the year.
