PUC Confirms More Consistent Water Supply as Rivers Recharge After Heavy Rain

VICTORIA, Seychelles — With the sudden downpour over the past couple of days, the Public Utilities Corporation (PUC) has stated that there should be a more consistent supply of water starting today. This was explained by the chief executive of PUC, Joel Valmont, on Tuesday evening.

Mr Valmont noted that the rivers that had run dry following the months-long drought have been recharged plentifully. According to Mr Valmont, the Port Launay water catchment has overflowed, and as for the Caïfman one, PUC has been working on clearing the debris and any other obstacles in order to allow it to flow smoothly again. The chief executive also mentioned that even on Praslin, the heavy rain has contributed to a healthy volume of water.

However, Mr Valmont also explained that PUC is currently working on the quality of the water due to the silt that it may hold from the raw source. It will undergo the process known as backwashing, which is the process of treatment that involves pumping water backward through a filter’s media to flush out accumulated contaminants and debris. The operation is expected to be completed within the day, after which full water supply to households and businesses should resume.

PUC has thanked customers for their patience during the recent disruptions and has reminded the public to continue using water responsibly, even as the reservoirs return to healthy levels. The Corporation will continue to monitor river flows and reservoir levels in the coming days to ensure stable supply across Mahé and Praslin.
