PUC Confirms Work on New Containerised Desalination Plant for Praslin

VICTORIA, Seychelles — The Public Utilities Corporation (PUC) has confirmed that installation work is underway on a newly dispatched containerised desalination plant on Praslin, which will add 1,000 cubic metres per day to the island’s desalinated water production, bringing the total daily capacity to 3,900 cubic metres.
The company’s chief operations officer, Ravin Sunassee, gave the update during a press briefing at PUC’s desalination plant on Eve Island, addressing ongoing efforts to manage the water situation on Praslin. The corporation issued a press release on October 4 stating that persistent dry weather has pushed Praslin’s water situation to a critical stage, with 95 percent of supply now coming from desalination and only 5 percent from rivers.
Mr Sunassee noted that the new unit is part of a wider programme to expand and modernise water infrastructure on the inner islands, designed to ensure supply security during periods of reduced rainfall. PUC continues to monitor demand closely while encouraging water conservation among households and businesses on Praslin.
The commissioning of the new plant is expected in the coming weeks, and PUC has indicated that further updates on supply levels and customer guidance will be provided through its usual public information channels.
