First Day of Beoliere Road Closure Runs Smoothly as Boulder Removal Begins

VICTORIA, Seychelles — The first day of the 20-day road closure in Beolière, Port Glaud, passed without any major issues, authorities confirmed on Tuesday, as urgent mitigation works began to remove an unstable 200-tonne boulder and stabilise the surrounding slope.

The closure, which started at 8am on Tuesday, follows a rockfall incident on September 15, 2025, which led the Disaster Risk Management Division (DRMD) to declare the area a Potential Disaster Area. In an interview, chief risk management officer of the DRMD, Daniel Cetoupe, described the first day as smooth, noting that affected residents had cooperated with evacuation measures, and that alternative transport and emergency services were in place.

‘So far, today being the first day, we have not had any hiccups,’ he said. ‘We are just fine-tuning the assistance being provided to families. They have all relocated to places where they are comfortable and can be accommodated during the day,’ added Mr Cetoupe.

The DRMD has reminded the public to continue to respect the closure, which is necessary to ensure the safety of residents and workers during the high-risk operation. Mitigation works are expected to continue for the next three weeks, after which the road will be assessed for reopening.
